This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm especially in India, Bangladesh , Nepal and many other countries. People wear yellow clothes on this day. In the scriptures, Basant Panchami is referred to as Rishi Panchami, and it is also described in different ways in Puranas, scriptures and many poetic texts. In ancient India and Nepal, the whole year was divided into six seasons, of which spring was the most favourite season of the people. When flowers bloomed, mustard flowers in the fields started shining like gold, ears of barley and wheat started blooming, mango trees started blossoming and colourful butterflies started hovering everywhere.
Significance
The day of Vasant Panchami also reminds us of Prithviraj Chauhan . He defeated the foreign invader Mohammad Ghori 16 times and showed generosity by letting him live every time, but when he was defeated for the seventeenth time, Mohammad Ghori did not spare him. He took him with him to Afghanistan and gouged out his eyes. The incident that followed is world famous. Mohammad Ghori wanted to see the magic of his word-piercing arrow before giving him the death penalty. On the advice of Prithviraj's fellow poet Chandrabardai, Ghori sat on a high place and struck a frying pan to signal. Then Chandrabardai gave the message to Prithviraj.
